Military Service:
- Revolutionary War: circa 1777, Pvt. Valentine Ritter was engaged in the Revolutionary War. Was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, serving as a private under Washington., Revolutionary War, USA.16,17,5
Other Events:
- Pvt. Valentine Ritter was also known as Von Volentine Ritter.5
- On 13-APR-1803, Pvt. Valentine Ritter One hundred acres of land in Tyrone Twp. adjoining the land of Dave Tufselman [Fufselman] Thoma, Buffalo Hill, and land of the applicant, including his improvement of a house about six or seven acres of clear land, cleared by the applicant ... first improved in the month of August 1793 in Tyrone Twp., Perry Co., PA, USA.18
- In his youth, Valentine enjoyed the comforts and luxuries shared in a home of affluence, the social and official standing of his father’s family. While pursuing his education, under despotism of Frederick the Great, Valentine realized he could not achieve his goals and ideals in his homeland and decided, with approval of his father to emigrate to America before being inducted into involuntary army service.
Valentine, provided with ample funds, by his wealthy family and assistance of friends, made his escape down the Rhine Valley to the Netherlands and embarked on a sailing vessel at Rotterdam. After a stormy six week voyage, in agonizing confinement, in an ill-ventilated compartment, was gripped by seasickness. He later remarked he felt he never recovered from the journey, would never attempt to make another voyage across the ocean for all the wealth in Germany.
A few years later, following the death of Johannes, his father, Valentine had to forfeit his father's inheritance since he would have to return to Germany to claim the inheritance. Due to German law, upon his return to Germany, he would be compelled to join the German army. Valentine fled Germany to escape the army; therefore, there was no incentive to return to the country he had just left.
Valentine located among the Germans who had previously settled in Chester, Berks, and Schuylkill Counties PA. He was employed for approximately twenty years as a teacher in select schools in most of which the instruction was in German. He had a remarkable skill as a penman. After Valentine married Anna Susanna Bensinger, they located near her home at McKeansburg, Schuylkill Co., Pennsylvania and later in Brunswick Township, in Berks Co., Pennsylvania.
In 1796 after the birth of three children, Daniel, Mary, and John, his health becoming impaired, he moved and bought a farm in Perry Co., PA located along the road from Ickesburg to Loysville. The remaining five children of his family were born at this place. He died here at the age of 71.
Valentine made occasional references of his uncle, presumably on his father’s side, who had been a tutor in military affairs to Crown Prince Frederick II (Frederick the Great). When Frederick ascended to the throne, he gave Valentine’s uncle a General’s commission.4,19,3,12

Research Notes:
- RESEARCH NOTE (As of March 2024): Known Facts about Valentine Ritter (1749-1820):
There is first hand documentation in Valentine own words, Johannes, Valentine's father, died shortly after Valentine arrived in the United States, putting Johannes Ritter's death around 1775.
Valentine was the youngest of Baron Johannes Ritter's four sons. Many genealogical trees indicate various names for his mother. There is no official documentation as to what Valentine's birth mother's forename or surname was.
It should be noted, Verena Leisinger cannot be the mother of this Pvt. Valentine Ritter since she and her husband had multiple male sons following Valentine's birth and after his father's death. Unless a miracle occurred, Verena and her husband Johannes cannot be Pvt. Valentine Ritter parents.
The search of official records comprised variant spellings of Ritter and Valentine's first name, including nicknames, abbreviations, and the like. There are no official, church, or otherwise, birth records of a Pvt. Valentine Ritter being born in Alsace during the year 1749, including one year prior and following his accepted birth date.
The same applies for documentation as to Valentine's immigration into the United States. It should be noted in the 1770's, Valentine was of the legal age where his entry into the United States would have been officially documented.
Some sources place Valentine as immigrating in 1776, 1782, and 1808, those Valentine's are not this Valentine. Why? Following the death of Johannes, his father, this Valentine had to forfeit his father's inheritance since he would have to return to Germany to claim the inheritance. Due to German law, upon his return to Germany, he would be compelled to join the German army. Valentine fled Germany to escape the army; therefore, there was no incentive to return to the country he had just left. Valentine later remarked he felt he never recovered from his Transatlantic journey, would never attempt to make another voyage across the ocean for all the wealth in Germany.
Both Valentine's listed parents, Baron Johannes Ritter and (Unknown) (Unknown), are the most likely combination found in the official records, except for Valentine's birth which has yet to be officially confirmed.
The aforementioned parents and their children fell within Valentine's first hand documentation. However, there is no conclusive official evidence that (Unknown) (Unknown) is his mother nor the siblings are that of this Pvt. Valentine Ritter because Valentine did not mention the names of his mother nor siblings. Therefore, consideration and caution should be utilized the ancestors of Pvt. Valentine Ritter listed herein.3,20
