Henry Mickley1,2

M, ID# 1649, b. 1754, d. 8-OCT-1763

Parents:

Father*: John Jacob Mickley1 b. 1697, d. 18-AUG-1769
Mother*: Elizabeth Barbara Burkhalter1 b. circa 1719, d. 8-AUG-1769

Birth, Marriage, Death, and Burial:

Other Events:

  • On 8-OCT-1763, Henry Mickley, Barbara Mickley, Anna Margaretha Wootring, Johann Schneider, Eva Schneider, Sarah Schneider, Magdalena Schneider, Dorothy Schneider and (Unknown) Schneider were victims. A small band of twelve Lenape Indians crossed the River Lehigh at Whitehall fresh from their attack on the settlers in Allen township. As they reached John Jacob Mickley's farm, they encountered three of his children, Peter (11), Henry (9), and Barbara (7), gathering nuts under a chestnut tree. Upon seeing the Indians, they began to run away. Barbara was overtaken not far from the tree by an Indian who knocked her down with his tomahawk. Henry had reached the fence near the house. While climbing the fence, he was struck in the back by a tomahawk, instantly killing him. Both Barbara and Henry were scalped; Barbara died the following morning. Peter was able to escape, ran to the woods, hiding in the underbrush between two large trees undiscovered by the Indians. Upon hearing the screams from John Schneider's homestead, he knew the band of Indians were there and no longer a threat to him. Peter then ran to Adam Deshler's fort, where his older brother, John Jacob Mickley (25) was, informing them of the horrors which had transpired including the Schneider's homestead being set aflame. It should be noted the Indians feared the Mickley's large ferocious dog, thus their avoiding attacking their homestead.

Rev. Heckwelder, a missionary to the Indians, later stated the Indians were provoked by prior events at the John Stenton's tavern where they were intimidated and robbed months before. The Indians returned to Bethlehem, seeking a magistrate who sent them back with a letter to the tavern demanding the stolen property be returned. When they returned to the tavern, they were order from the premises on threat of their lives and they left. Following the attack, it was determined the Indians had intended to attack the homestead of Paul Balliet, owner of the tavern, and had mistaken the Mickley and Schneider homes as Paul Balliet's Indian Massacre, Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., PA, USA.3,5,2,6,7,8,9,10,11,12

John Peter Mickley1,2,3

M, ID# 1648, b. 29-MAY-1753, d. 11-OCT-1827

Parents:

Father*: John Jacob Mickley1 b. 1697, d. 18-AUG-1769
Mother*: Elizabeth Barbara Burkhalter1 b. circa 1719, d. 8-AUG-1769

Birth, Marriage, Death, and Burial:

Military Service:

  • Revolutionary War: between 1775 and 1783, John Peter Mickley was engaged in the Revolutionary War. A fifer. Was in the battle of Germantown, 04-OCT-1777, with his brother John Martin, Revolutionary War, USA.4,5

Other Events:

  • On 8-OCT-1763, John Peter Mickley witnessed Henry Mickley and Barbara Mickley A small band of twelve Lenape Indians crossed the River Lehigh at Whitehall fresh from their attack on the settlers in Allen township.

Following the attack, it was determined the Indians had intended to attack the homestead of Paul Balliet, owner of the tavern, and had mistaken the Mickley and Schneider homes as Paul Balliet's Indian Massacre, Whitehall Twp., Lehigh Co., PA, USA.6,7,3,8,9,10,11,12,13,14

  • Wrote DREAMING
Last night I lay a dreaming
Of days of long ago; I was back at my home in Loysville
Where winters had plenty of snow.
The old house was newly painted,
Still standing, a memory; Of when I was a youngster
          When on worries bothered me.
    Old grandfather clock still running
And striking the time of day, As it did when I was a youngster
          Laughing and happy and gay.
Father and mother and Maggie [Mary Elnore MILLER]
Just like as in days of old, "Oh what a glorious feeling"
          Life just seemed to unfold.
    Mame HEIM* was there laughing
And glad to see me, too. My old friends gathered 'round me
          As true friends always do.
    Milt KLINE* said "Hello, Eddie!"
We're glad to see you back"; There's no place like home, ever,
Even if it's in a shack.
    Young EBERSOLE* I played with
Looked just about the same; Youth had returned so sudden
Just like a new born flame.
    When suddenly I awakened,
That ended all my fun; And reminded me quite keenly
          That today I was eighty-one.
