After two eight-month deployments in the South China Sea, Jim was reassigned as Communication Officer for the Commander of Destroyer Squadron 26 with home port in Norfolk. While serving in this assignment, the Cuban Missile Crisis unfolded during October 1962 and eight ships within his squadron were assigned as screening ships. The squadron successfully intercepted the Soviet ships, including those with the cargo of missiles destined for Cuba. Jim was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in 1963.13
